Carnelian and Jade
Earrings
This semi-precious,
translucent form of chalcedony
has been used in jewelry since ancient times. As
with most stones, it was ascribed certain magical
properties. In ancient Egypt the orange-red color
symbolized life. In Africa and parts of Russia it
was valued for its alleged healing properties.
During the Classical Era and the Renaissance,
carnelian enjoyed its greatest popularity and
was often used as seals and in signet rings.
