This ancient Chinese symbol
represents the word “love.”
Intricate writing characters such as this were first invented
by the Kan tribe which lived in China about four thousand
years ago. They symbolize the essence of the words they
represent. In the third century, these characters were adopted
by Japan where they are referred to as Kanji symbols.
The Chinese Love Symbol Pendant & Earrings are approximately 1/2" W
x 1/2" L. The Chinese Love Symbol Pendant includes
an 18" Sterling Silver Chain.

creature, he is sometimes related to rain, floods
and male fertility. He often hides in caves of the
depths of the sea, revealing himself briefly only
to disappear again. Dragons can be seen on
ceramics, textiles and metalwork dating back
to the 7th century.

Based on a Chinese silver napkin ring holder made
near the turn of the century for the export market,
this jewelry features the Chinese and Japanese
character for good fortune and happiness. The
napkin ring holder is in the Asian Export Art
Department at the Peabody Essex Museum.
